It might be a little early into 2018, but we’re calling this Omega’s finest year. The Swiss luxury watchmaker takes things up a notch with its Master Chronometer, its technically-innovative mechanical watch. Boasting an array of performance-based features, each painstakingly designed to superior accuracy, this is currently one of the strongest contenders in the diver’s watch market.
What sets the Master Chronometer apart, however, is the acknowledgement it has received from the Swiss Federal Institute for Metrology (METAS), which certifies the timepiece for the highest standard of precision, magnetic resistance and chronometric performance in the Swiss watch industry. This is a huge milestone for Omega, a brand that began more than 170 years ago.
Omega president and CEO Mr. Raynald Aeschlimann emphasized that the brand’s spirit lies in its extensive research and development for its watchmaking movements: “There is nothing more important than a high-quality, reliable movement. Since the brand’s beginnings in 1848, it has remained at the heart of our company’s thinking. Movement is not just a representation of the brand; it is the brand.” This is also the main reason why consumers turn to Omega when it comes to luxury watches with exceptional value – the very definition of luxury stems from a combination of superior movements with technical and functional designs, without forgetting to pay attention to every single detail.
Despite its rich heritage, Omega is not against the idea of evolving with the times. In fact, the company actively observes current and social media trends to enhance its developmental direction. It’s no secret that the modern generation and the internet are inseparable, especially when you take into account the need for fast browsing and social networking. As a dynamic brand, it is crucial to keep up with the pace and stay updated with what’s new in the industry.
As Aeschlimann aptly puts it, “In this new era, brands must also move forward with an open mind and dare to push the envelope. We cannot keep thinking that preserving old traditions is the only solution. We should not reject new ideas and stick to conventionalism. If we do, it will be a huge mistake.”
“The modern generation is not afraid to share their ideas and show their personality. They like things that have stories; things that can inspire and motivate them. This is why our James Bond collection timepieces have always been so well-received,” he continued.
Talking about the ambassadors of the Omega Tresor collection of women’s watches, Aeschlimann has nothing but praise for supermodel Cindy Crawford and her daughter, Kaia Gerber. “Despite her young age, Kaia has made her mark in the modeling world, and has her own ideas and influence. At Omega, we are on parallel wavelengths. I’m confident that she will be able to bring her own brand of style to what we have in store for the future, allowing us to reach an even more diverse range of like-minded, strong individuals like her.”

Feast your eyes on the selections presented by Omega at Baselworld 2018:
Omega The Seamaster Diver 300m
Known to many as the ‘James Bond series’, the Seamaster Diver 300m has always been an integral part of Omega. A brand-new look has been unveiled for the watch in 2018, with 14 unique models – 6 in stainless steel, and 8 in a mix of stainless steel and gold. Now sized at a larger 42mm, each new Diver 300m boasts a Master Chronometer Calibre 8800, instantly taking the collection into a higher realm of precision, performance and magnetic resistance.
The bezel is now made from ceramic for longer-lasting durability, while the polished ceramic wavy-patterned dials are brought back due to popular demand. But what makes the Diver 300m stand out is its helium escape valve, now in a patented conical shape that allows the ingenious technology to be operated underwater. The metal bracelets are ergonomically-designed, with an extendable foldover rack-and-pusher with a helpful diver extension for functional fashion underwater.
Omega The Speedmaster Dark Side Of the Moon Apollo 8
“We’ll see you on the other side.” The now-iconic phrase uttered by pilot Jim Lovell before exploring the mysterious dark side of the moon during the Apollo 8 mission is engraved on the caseback of this one-of-a-kind watch. Designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission, the skeletonized dial reveals a realistic imagery of the moon’s blackened surface, recreated through laser ablation.
The entire watch is made from black zirconium oxide ceramic, with a contrasting yellow-coloured coding that is reminiscent of the earlier Speedmaster Racing models in 1968. Yellow is often associated with speed and vitality, making it an ideal choice for this Apollo 8 edition. The black-and-yellow theme extends to the leather strap, which contains a hidden section of rubber through the middle, visible via strategically-placed micro-perforations.
Omega The Seamaster 1948 Limited Editions
The Seamaster 1948 celebrates its 70th anniversary this year with two limited-edition watches, with only 1,948 pieces available per model. The Seamaster 1948 Small Seconds and the Seamaster 1948 Central Second stay true to their original postwar design, but are now powered by Master Chronometer 8804 and 8806 respectively. The caseback features a patented Omega Naiad Lock that ensures correct orientation, engraved with the limited-edition number.
As a further tribute to the aviators and mariners who have trusted Omega timepieces through history, the flat sapphire crystal is laser-engraved and hand-lacquered with a 70th anniversary logo, a Chris-Craft boat and Gloster Meteor aircraft. Both watches are presented in a soft brown leather box, complete with a spare NATO strap in the original Admiralty grey colour.
The Tresor Collection
Omega’s signature Tresor collection gets a more youthful update, with more than 10 brighter colour options and straps to choose from, including crocodile leather, calfskin and satin. The case, made of stainless steel or 18K Sedna gold, is as versatile as it is stylish, allowing the wearer to dress up or down according to her mood. Available in either 36 or 39mm sizes, diamond paving curves along each side of the case, and a single diamond is set within the crown. Each crown also includes a red liquid ceramic flower, made out of five omega logos. For an extra touch of thoughtful detailing, the caseback doubles as a tiny mirror.
[Pre-Basel] Bringing the Olympic spirit to life
As the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games since 1932, Omega has borne witness to 27 games over the past 86 years. Paying homage to this long-standing commitment, the Seamaster Olympic Games Collection is a testament to Omega’s precision, innovation and passion.
Inspired by the Omega stopwatches used from past Games, particularly those used at the 1976 events in Montreal and Innsbruck, this collection comprises five exclusive timepieces, each representing the different colours of the famous Rings of the Olympic Games: black, yellow, green, blue and red. Presented on micro-perforated leather straps that provide style and breathability, the 39.5mm watches are driven by the Master Chronometer Calibre 8800.
The domed black-and-white dial is designed for easy reading at first glance, with sporty hands and bold hour markers set in sharp contrast with a minute track on a white outer circle, not unlike the tracks found in a stadium. The coloured pulse reader encircling the dial also features three 20-second timing intervals, which comes in handy for athletic wearer who want to calculate their pulse beats-per-minute.
The anodized aluminium ring on the caseback includes all the host cities and dates from Omega’s impressive Olympic Games journey, beginning from Los Angeles 1932 all the way to Tokyo 2020, Beijing 2022, Paris 2024 and finally, full circle to Los Angeles 2028. As a reference to Omega’s role as Official Timekeeper through till 2032, only 2,032 versions of each model have been created, making these watches worthy of your time and collection.
